In the Court of Cranes

Red-Crowned Cranes Mural with Gold Leaf Sun
Artist: Baiju
Medium: Acrylic and 24K gold leaf on wall
Surface: Interior wall paneling
Dimensions: Approximately 8 feet diameter (gold disc)

Theme & Concept:
This mural draws inspiration from the graceful elegance of red-crowned cranes — symbols of longevity, grace, and harmony across many Asian cultures. Set against a glowing circular gold leaf background, the composition captures a poetic moment in motion: one crane in flight, another gently reaching toward it, and the third observing in stillness. Together, they form a narrative of connection, movement, and balance.

Process & Technique:
The process began with freehand sketching directly onto the wall to capture scale and fluidity. The gold circle was built layer by layer using delicate sheets of 24K gold leaf, carefully burnished to reflect ambient light and create a luminous backdrop that shifts with the room’s mood.

Once the base was in place, the cranes were painted using professional-grade acrylics. The feathers were rendered in fine, layered strokes, with soft gradients of white, grey, and black, while the red crowns were added last for focus and vibrancy. The interaction of matte acrylic with the metallic sheen of the gold creates a dynamic tension — subtle yet powerful.

Intended Impact:
This mural was designed as a statement piece for a sophisticated residential interior, merging traditional Asian symbolism with a contemporary minimalist aesthetic. The composition plays with negative space, balance, and light — offering a meditative focal point within the living area.
